HAWAII FIVE-O THE FINAL SEASON: SATISFACTORY SEND OFF

It’s hard to believe that the new version of HAWAII FIVE-O has been on the air for 10 seasons. That doesn’t quite match the number of years as the original but the series lived up to the expectations of fans and each week presented solid stories, acting, locations and more. With it leaving Friday nights will not be the same for fans. Fortunately we have the series on discs to enjoy repeatedly though. And this final season did not go out with a whimper.

The episodes for this season once more ranged from regular items to those not seen in other shows. New and old members of the team alike are given their respective episodes to shine. All of them come through with superb actors in their now familiar roles. The production team continued to display how good they were at what they did. And the locations never looked more appealing.

Old foes and storylines were brought to successful and satisfying conclusions. While Wo Fat, the main antagonist of team leader Steve McGarret (Alex O’Loughlin), may have died his wife was on hand attempting to avenge him and lead his criminal empire. Kono Kalakaua's (Grace Park) husband Adam had to deal with his yakuza past and regain the trust of the team. Final repercussions from McGarret’s mother (Christine Lahti) take place. Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) and his group finally appear in a cross-over episode from their series, something fans have been waiting for.

On the romantic side Junior (Beulah Koale) and Tani (Meaghan Rath) finally find romance with one another and officially become a couple. Danny (Scott Caan) meets the potential girl of his dreams only to lose her, leaving the door open to reconnect with his wife. And by the final episode McGarret finally makes the move to reunite with Lt. Catherine Rollins (Michelle Borth) his long time interest.

A final farewell from the McGarrett home with all hands on deck takes place in the final episode. Tears are shed by the characters but my guess is those tears were real from the various cast members. You can’t be on a show like this for 10 seasons and not come closer together. And yet there were a few minor threads left dangling in case a reunion could come about in the future. Weddings. Graduations. Help with a new case. All are left on the table but not blatantly so.

One couldn’t hope for a more fitting farewell than what we were given with this final season. Knowing this was what it was going in made it less painful. And so does having it on disc to pull off the shelf and revisit from time to time. Some claim physical media is dying. I say I’m glad it’s here to be enjoyed over and over again. And this series is one that will be watched.
