KISS OF THE TARANTULA: EFFECTIVE LOW BUDGET HORROR FLICK

I’d heard the title of this film before and knew it would try to offer some scares but being a fan of the genre I didn’t expect much to frighten me here. Truth be told it didn’t give me chills but I can see those who have a fear of spiders cringing while watching this small movie.

Young Susan Bradley has always been fascinated with insects, especially spiders, much to the consternation of her mother. One night she discovers that her mother is having an affair and planning on having the man kill her father. Making matters worse the lover is Susan’s uncle and her father’s brother, a local lawman! To protect her mother Susan takes matters into her own hands and slips a tarantula into her mother’s bed that night. Her mother wakes to see the spider and dies of a heart attack.

Years pass and Susan continues to live with her father, the local mortician and funeral home operator. She is still ostracized by the local teens her age but doesn’t mind as long as she has her little eight legged friends. A group of the teens sneak into the mortuary one night and find her alone, smashing the cases with her precious spiders in the basement. But Susan is not one to let things go unpunished. It isn’t long before the teens begin finding themselves attacked by the spiders Susan plants on them while doing things like necking at the local drive in.

If all of this weren’t weird enough Susan also has to deal with the advances being put on her by her uncle. Talk about a perv. First he’s sleeping with his brother’s wife and planning on murdering him and now he wants to sleep with his niece. What are the odds that Susan will find a way to deal with him as well?

Like many movies shot during this time this one it is painfully obvious that the budget on this one was miniscule. In spite of that and several other problems the film does offer a decent movie to be enjoyed by film fans who love these sort of movies. Sure the teens look more like college age students, the acting is along the lines of local high school production quality, the lighting is a bit overdone at times and the cinematography seems like one of the first projects this camera operator has done. It still provides a fun time for horror fans.
