It seems more and more horror movies these days want to
focus on the occult and Satanism. Perhaps that’s due to the declining interest
in religion these days. But if so then why fear the opposite of something you
don’t believe in? Perhaps the end result will swing the pendulum back towards
faith. In the meantime we have movies like SATANIC.
A group of teens is out on a road trip, heading for the
latest incarnation of Coachella. But before hitting the music fest they decide
to take a detour through the streets of Los Angeles. One of the group is a buff
on occult murders that have taken place in the city. He and his girlfriend
chide the other two into checking out several locations, a sort of tourist
guided trip into the macabre.
Along the way they pick up a hitchhiker who shows them a
location where an accused Satanist killed himself. In spectacular fashion the
hitchhiker follows suit, cutting her throat in front of the foursome who
understandably freak out. Rather than get caught up in a murder investigation
they hightail it out of the hotel.
The group next approaches the owner of an occult shop who
talks to them. Intrigued they follow him as he makes his way to a secluded
backwoods area and a house there. Looking through windows they see the man and
a group of followers about to sacrifice a young woman and rescue her. But
things are not always what they seem.
Horror fans have taken to bashing this film nonstop online
and rightfully so. There are no likeable characters in the film with all four
teens coming off as obnoxious spoiled rich kids looking for kicks. The fact
that one couple is interested in the occult only to freak out at the first sign
of anything that involves satanic rituals shows them to be a couple of posers
more in touch with shopping at Hot Topic than an actual interest in the occult.
Fans will also be disappointed that there isn’t more gore in
the film or actual frightening aspect the entire proceeding. One minor twist
towards the end is a nice touch but after sitting through the rest of the film
you find yourself not caring any longer. The main star of the film is Sarah
Hyland who has been a major actress in the TV series MODERN FAMILY. My guess is
she wanted to be in something more “adult” and “edgy” but the end result is far
from that. Instead we get another straight to DVD movie that offers little.
