As with so many shows on the air today this one too benefits
from the characters not only working together as a team but as a surrogate
family as well. Each may have their own families to deal with and issues that
stem from their families but as members of this team they have each other to
depend on and to watch out for one another.
Season five gets back to some of the best the show has had
to offer and steers away from some of the things that slowed down season 4. It
opens with team leader Dwayne Price (Scott Bakula) in ICU after having been
shot by a hit woman whose job was to see him dead. Now the team must come
together on their own and find the woman before she can escape custody.
This storyline allows the introduction of a new character
into the mix, Agent Hannah Khoury (Necan Zadegan), as Pride’s replacement to
lead the team in New Orleans. After Pride’s recovery and with all questions
answered in the past investigations of his team in previous seasons, Pride is
moved to the main position at NCIS in their local office. He goes from street
cop to the man in charge of assignments and paperwork, something that doesn’t
sit well with him.
The season also has two unexpected moments to looks at,
spoiler alert for those who haven’t watched yet. Ready? We’re introduced to a
new character, Jimmy Boyd (Jason Alan Carvell), and discover that he’s Pride’s
half-brother by his father Cassius (Stacy Keach). The second stunner is when
Cassius is shot and killed saving Pride’s life. Both are items not seen coming
as the series progressed but having lasting effects on the show. Jimmy is
provided with a job at Pride’s bar and Cassius death weighs heavy on Pride.
In addition to all of this we learn that there is a secret
task force looking into the organization behind all of the troubles that have
plagued Pride and his team in the past called Apollyon. The team investigating
them is led by Raymond Isler (Derek Webster), the FBI agent who was assigned to
investigate the team from the FBI and who became a fan and supporter of the
team as he did so. The investigation leads to foreign soil and a potential
ambush as well as the search for a mole feeding the organization information.
As with other shows the entire cast work well together here
as a team and each gets a chance to shine. Bakula could hog the camera as much
as he wants but never does show, allowing each of the team members a chance to
step into the limelight. That is especially true of Zadegan as Khoury who finds
her way into the hearts of the team and the fans as well.
Past demons also play a large part of the ending of the
season as Pride is kidnapped and drugged at one point. Given does of LSD the
remnants of that in his system have wreaked havoc in him during the current
season, but it begins here. It’s a situation that plays into much from the end
here to the beginning of season six.
When this series first began I loved it. You can’t help but
like Bakula in anything he does. But each of this fellow actors have become
favorites as well. There was one season where things seemed to take too long to
come to a close but season five seems to have gotten things back on track. As
with all the NCIS series this one is one to enjoy non-stop and over and over
again. I know it holds a favorite spot on my shelf and hopefully it will yours
as well.
