The series BULL featuring Michael Weatherly in the title role has shown that the abilities he displayed in NCIS weren’t a flash in the pan. Carrying a series on your shoulders no matter how good the supporting cast is would be a make or break situation. Weatherly has shown he can star with the best of them and has not only shined in this series but allowed those around him to shine as well. It makes this one of those series that becomes a weekly staple for many.
For those who have never watched the series you’re missing out. The story revolves around Dr. Jason Bull (Weatherly), a psychologist and trial science expert who owns TAC (Trial Analysis Corporation), a company that specializes in helping select the perfect jury to help their clients win their case. Assisting him are Benjamin “Benny” Colon (Freddy Rodriguez) the teams attorney, Marissa Morgan (Geneva Carr) a psychologist and neurolinguistics expert and the office leader, Chester “Chunk” Palmer (Christopher Jackson) an expert stylist and now attorney, Danielle “Danny” James (Jaime Lee Kirchner) ex-FBI agent and investigator and Taylor Rentzel (MacKenzie Meehan) a cyber expert and ex-NSA employee. Each week this team is faced with a new client and new case to win.
The series went through its establishment phase and sophomore years with ease. Then came the third season where they upended the stories of several main characters leaving the fans wait to see if they could deliver on season 4. Thankfully they’ve done so remarkably well.
The season kicks off with Bull facing fatherhood of all things. Having reunited with his ex-wife Isabella (Yara Martinez) last season they ended with her being pregnant. Now Bull not only has to face those clients that ask for his services but raising a child as well. It won’t be easy in episode one because he’s lost his top attorney and Isabella’s brother Benny over their being back together. But let’s face it, we know Benny will be back and all will be well.
This season also sees series regular Chunk move up a notch. He’s graduated and is now an attorney who can help fill in when Benny is unavailable. Eventually he steps into his own here rather than be the fall back guy. Chunk also continues getting to know the daughter he never had, attempting to make up for lost time.
While these three characters are all front and center each of the characters that form Bull’s team at TAC are given their due. All of the actors here show why they are a valuable asset to not just the team but the series as well. No one is given more time on screen than the rest (with the exception of Weatherly and Rodriguez) and their skills often result in the team winning the cases they take on.
The show likes to take on topical cases that feel drawn from the current headlines and does so in a way that never feels like it panders to one side of an issue or another. Many times a story concept focuses on the idea that both sides have a story to tell with neither one rising over the other. Topics like criminal intent, wrongful convictions, social media influencers, personal assault, blackouts from drinking, gin control, long ago child abuse, college admission scandals and more are brought up this season. Each provides an interesting look at those topics.
The series feels comfortable now. That could be bad news for the show. But at the same time it remains fresh on so many levels. In the end it leaves you wanting more each week, has you waiting until that next episode to see what happens. Fortunately with the series on disc you don’t have to wait and can watch them as you like. And having every season on hand you can go back and watch from the start and view the development of the show and its characters. It’s a show that’s worth watching more than once. Now to wait for the next season to come out on disc.
