DELICIOUS SERIES 2: THE PLOT, NOT THE SOUP, THICKENS

I gave a positive review to the first series of DELICIOUS and suggested those who might enjoy it purchase a copy to enjoy as well. I’ll start off by saying the same holds true for the second series as well. And if the term series confuses you just change it to season and it should make sense.

It’s been almost a year since the passing of Leo Vincent (Iain Glen). With some finagling and assistance provided at the end of last series (I won’t give it away what) his ex-wife, Gina (Dawn French), and widow, Sam (Emilia Fox) have worked together to make The Penrose Hotel successful once again. With Gina creating meals and Sam running the front end one would think they’d get along better than in the past. But a certain amount of bitterness still runs through both and while working together they frequently but heads still.

This time around the government agency that was investigating them last season continues to pursue its case. To add more fuel to the fire an unexpected visitor arrives that Gina wants gone and that Sam uses as a way to punish Gina. That visitor is Gina’s father Joe (Franco Nero). Having abandoned her when she was a child Gina has no sympathy for the man, instead still carrying a grudge against him that will take a little more than just time to dissolve.

Wanting to become acquainted with his granddaughter Joe intends to stay. Sam invites him to stay in the hotel after Gina has tried to have him thrown off the property by the police. Teresa, Gina’s daughter, tries to connect with Joe in spite of warning from Gina that he’ll just tear her heart to pieces when the time suits him.

Also new this season is an addition to the kitchen staff in the form of Adam (Aaron Anthony) who knows his way around the kitchen. This was another of Sam’s plans to irritate Gina but it backfires when Adam turns out to offer more than enough skills to please Gina. Adam, like everyone in this series, has a secret of his own that comes out about halfway through this series.

Also on a regular basis this series is James Harley (Risteard Cooper), the chef and ex-lover of Gina and father of…well I won’t say in case you haven’t watched series 1 yet. James is on hand to try and win Gina over again with the hope of marrying her. His help would alleviate several of the problems going on in the hotel at present.

A major portion of the series this time around revolves around a celebration of the life of Leo. He may be dead but he’s definitely not forgotten. In his will he requested a full Sicilian wake. This calls for a large amount of food and preparation as well as a gathering of family and friends. And not all of them feel quite like celebrating the deceased.

As with the first series this one has plenty of laughs and enough things going on between characters to make you wonder every few minutes what will happen next. And in the end the chance that this dysfunctional group will finally come together raises its head once more. Only time will tell. So pick this one up the same time you pick up series one and enjoy them over a weekend binge watching. I’m still guessing you’ll enjoy them both.
