NCIS is the top rated show on television these days and it’s
easy to see why. The show offers an interesting take on the crime drama genre
and brings out some great characters to root for. It was only a matter of time
before the show spun off satellite series and both, NCIS: LOS ANGELES and NCIS:
NEW ORLEANS have done well too.
I’ve enjoyed both but have found NEW ORLEANS to be a
surprise for me. I didn’t expect to enjoy it quite this much. I’d followed it
regularly for the first two years but for one reason or another missed out on
season three. I’m sorry that’s the case because after watching this I think it
may have been their best season yet.
The show runs around a different case each week involving
the local NCIS investigative team stationed there. Each crime involves a person
in the military which is how they catch the case to begin with. These can for
the most part be a typical murder but along the way there are ties between
cases which lead to a thread that runs through the whole season this year.
Leading the team is Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula), a former
lawman in New Orleans who loves his city more than most. Pride takes everything
to heart when it involves the town and will stop at nothing to protect it. This
forms some of the most intense moments in the series as he ensures that no harm
comes to the town. We also get to see his personal side, a less overbearing
leader than Gibbs (Mark Harmon) on the original series. Dwayne now owns a bar
in town where he once played piano while his mother sang. It is his refuge and
takes a big role this season.
Alongside Pride is Christopher LaSalle (Lucas Black) another
former lawman who moved here from GA. With is boyish charm and his deep
southern drawl, Christopher has developed an overwhelming respect for Pride, a
man whose taught him everything. This season sees another part of LaSalle’s
life brought to light as he learns he may have become a father to a child born
to a woman he spent time with a few years earlier. It not only changes his
attitude and his life, it has the potential to cause problems between him and
fellow NCIS agent Sonja Percy (Shalita Grant).
Percy is an ex-ATF agent who has transferred over to NCIS. A
cocky self-assured woman she can handle herself in any situation that comes
along. At the end of last season a possible romance between her and LaSalle was
hinted at. This season we’re just not sure where that’s going.
Rounding out the old crew are two characters who are also
provided with their own unique problems this season. Loretta Wade (CCH Pounder)
is the coroner who assists Pride in his investigations. She finds herself
dealing with a son she wants to protect but who has grown into a young man. Her
sidekick for the past two seasons, Sebastian Lund (Rob Kerkovich), finds
himself changing as well. He wants to step up from lab tech to full-fledged
NCIS agent and able to go into the field. This presents another bird leaving
Loretta’s nest that causes her issues.
Not back this season is Zoe McLellan as agent Meredith
Brody. At the end of last season she put the team in jeopardy by falling in
love with a man who turned out to be a home grown terrorist who nearly spoiled
the natural waterway leading into and out of New Orleans. In the wake of that
her character has decided to leave which places a strain on the team both
emotionally and man power wise.
In addition to that, the team has been put on hold for a
while and are just now recalled back to active duty. At the same time they are
in the middle of an investigation by the FBI.
